Greetings from your Groundhogs!

Hello and how do you do?  We welcomed the snow, and a groundhog burrow of our own making, to SK P217 this week!  Read on for more details..

Language

Daily 5 -
- New Decodable Books!  Please help your SKer add the decodables (black and white books) that are coming hom in their Friday Folder to their black book box at home.  This week's book featured a brand new word family that we had loads of fun getting to know!  (We've been a tad behind in sending home our books - while we only tackled one this week, some from previous weeks are coming home to roost with you!)
- The -ox family: We were thrilled to learn more about how to read and write box, fox, even lox!  We played pictionary and context clue games to help friends guess, write and read the members of this new family.  Go hunting for -ox family words this weekend at home and out and about!
- Sh/Th/Ch: We worked hard to read, sort and write these tricky digraphs over the week.  Ask your SKer "Shower... sh, th, or ch?  Chips... sh, th, or ch?"  This is tought stuff, but we can do it with good practice and strong connections!
- Word Family Review: We started sorting and classifying word family words in context, and in guessing games, to help friends strengthen their reading and writing skills.  Ask your SKer to be a word family expert this weekend... "Bin, bit, big... which one lives in the -it word family house?"

Printing -
- Mm: (M: start at the blue sky, pull down straight, pick up! Start at the blue sky, slant down right, slant up right, pull down straight. m: start at the red fence, pull down straight, push up and rainbow over, push up and rainbow over.)
- Nn  (N: start at the blue sky, pull down straight, pick up!  Start at the blue sky, slant down right, push up.  n: start at the red fence, pull down straight, push up, rainbow over, pull down.)

Math

New Math Stations! We were thrilled to play fun math games in small groups, circulating through to build our skills and enjoy play with numbers.  Some of our centers include...
- 2 Digit Detectives: Friends flip cards and color the two digit number that corresponds on their 100 chart.. careful!  27 isn't the same as 72!
- 100 Chart Patterning: Friends fill in missing numbers on the 100 chart from 1 to 100, and color patterns they find ("These all begin with 2!  These are end in 5!")
- Addition/Subtraction Number Story Books: Friends write and illustrate +/- stories using mystery bags filled with two colors of manipulatives to guide their process.

Science

Gaga for Groundhogs!
- Fact/Fiction: We explored the lore of Groundhog day (1/2 way through we winter we look to Phil to either see his shadow and bring on six more weeks of winter... or fail to see his shadow, signaling an early spring!)  We know that's fiction, but it's still fun!
- Research: We also put our scientist hats back on, watching videos and researching groundhog facts.. ask your SKer about how tall a groundhog stands, how much they way, how many pounds of dirt they can dig, where they're found, whta they like to eat, and who their predators are!
- Our burrow: We created our own groundhog burrow in P217!  Ask your friends what food we made for the burrow, and how we created the structure!

Announcements

- 100 Day: Notes are in Friday Folders with more information about 100 Day collections - please help your SKer to bring in his or hers next week!
- Dry hands, chapped lips: Many friends are complaining of sore hands and lips.  This dry weather leaves many of them wishing for a chapstick or hand lotion.  Feel free to send one of each along in their tote bag, and encouage them to moisturize when they come into school!
- PK Friends: We had a great time celebrating Sofia's PK sister's picnic day with a treat in SK!  Thanks, Liliana!

Reminders (There are loads, we know - but thank you for reading them all!)

- After School: If your SKer is signed up for after school on a regular basis between now and spring break (for a class, or for usual after school), please just send one more quick e-mail (i.e. "SK Friend, Tues and Thurs After School) - we want to be sure everyone is just where they should be, and that our info is up to date!
- No School: Teachers are here for an inservice on Monday, so be sure to take the day off with your SKers!  We'll see you back in our classroom on Tuesday.
- ICE SKATING: We'll meet you at the rink on Tuesday morning for our next ice skating lesson!  Thank you over and over again for all of the moms and dads who have stayed to help get us laced into and up onto our skates!
- Show and Share Night: We hope you'll be at school next Thursday, January 31st, for a fun filled night, looking into first grade classrooms!
- Show and Share Dinner Deadline: Please remember to turn in your Jimmy John's form by Tuesday next week with your check attached.
- Play Dough/Cookie Cutters: Thank you for bringing your contributions!  One more week to bring in any fresh dough/cutters that you can.
- Box Tops: Again, thank you for contributing!  Please continue to bring in any that you can for the next few weeks before we meet the deadline!
- Snowpants and boots: Your SKer must have both to play at recess.  Without them, they'll be on the blacktop, and shivery!  Thanks so much for your help.
- Illness in SK: We are sorry to say that your teachers (along with many SK friends and PP/LS teachers), have been home with the flu, sinus infections, and lost voices in the past month.  It is our intention to be here each and every day, but please know that in the case of our absence, we plan each week the Thursday before (preparing all materials, communicating throughout each day over e-mail and on the phone, etc.)  Your SK friends are well taken care of, and consistency for their learning is our priority.  Thank you for your support (and for keeping any sick friends home as well, to rest and recover before returning to school!)  We appreciate you all.

More Superstars, Skating, and Family Time on the Ice!

We had another wonderful week, filled with spectacular superstars, happy welcome-backs (Marco returns!) and even a festive Family Skate on Friday!  Read on for more good news...

Language
- Short Vowels: Friends sorted words with short a, short i, short e - it's tough work but SO important for our good reading brains!  (Hat, man, cap // hip, kit, bin // hen, bet, Ted)
- Beginning, Middle and End: Friends listened to stories and identified the book's beginning, the middle and its end.  They even began to incorporate these same plot points in their own Daily 5 Work on Writing, and in their free choice at the Book Making Shop!
- Lots of -op!  SKers have been working with the -op word family, sorting, matching and creating -op words of there own.  Enjoy being detectives for -op words this weekend with your SK friend ("STOP sign!  Lollipop!  Mop!)

Math
- Centers: SKers said goodbye to their old math centers and welcomed brand new ones!  Games to play in small groups for good practice include: additional symbol "Penguin Put Together", subtraction "Snowman Steal", work with recognizing, sequencing and filling in missing numbers up to 100, work with double digits (Is it 13?  Or 31?  How do you know?), writing original +/- number stories with illustrations, and sorting tricky shapes by common attribute (numbre of sides, color, size, etc.)
- Shape collage: We reviewed our shapes (simple shapes like circles, squares, ovals, rectangles, triangles, and newer shapes like parallelograms, and trapezoids!) and collaged them into exceptional portraits of our hero, Martin Luther King Jr!

Social Studies
- MLK Jr: We continued our study of Martin Luther King Jr.'s big ideas, reading good books and talking about our own thoughts and feelings.  We decided that we LOVE our big colorful room!  We love having friends who are different (in lots of ways!) from us - it makes life so much more interesting, and exciting.  We created a collage (each of us our own) with different shapes to illustrate a portrait of MLK Jr.  We also mixed colors together to demonstrate our

Reminders
- Show and Share Night - Thursday January 31st is Show and Share Night at USM!  Please join us 5:30-7:00 for a peek inside our first grade classrooms, see what first grade friends are doing, and meet the friendly teachers!  (If you placed a sandwich order, thank you for turning in your checks this week, and not Thursday evening!)
- Ice Skating - Our next lesson on Tuesday, 1/29 (We'll send another reminder e-mail the night before!) Don't forget a drop off at the rink, and to bring friends with their hats, mittens, coats, snow pants and skates!  We are so thankful for you help.
- Snow pants/boots - We'll send them home on Fridays for weekend play (and a good wash!) each week now.  If you need them home midweek or on a nightly basis, please talk with your SKer about this to make a plan together.

Announcements
- Mrs. Linzmeier: We were so excited to have our old friend back last week (and the Thurs/Fri before.)  Sadly, with the flu season in full effect, and her current treatment plan, her doctor strongly advised her to resume her leave until treatments have ended.  We appreciate your support, and reassure you that Mrs. Duffey and Ms. Schwartz will continue to team together, putting your children and their learning first each day in SK.  (Again, in the unusual case that either Mrs. Duffey or Ms. Schwartz needs to be absent from school, we will have Mrs. Peterson or Mr. Sweet join us for the day.  Both are very familiar faces to our children as each has substituted in our room many times this year; both teachers have taught SK classrooms as well, and are familiar with the curriculum.)
- Second Saturdays: Our grade level is thrilled to be collecting play dough and cookie cutters to contribute to the fourth grade service project.  If you are feeling generous, please send play dough, cookie cutters, or both with you SKer next week.  (There is a note in your SKer's Friday Folder with more details!)  The mothers and children in need will absolutely appreciate the chance to play and create together, thanks to your kind donations.

Skating, Superstars and Sunshine!

We had one big week in SK P217 - ice skating lessons, a double superstar week, and even some spring-like sunshine at the end of our week!  Read on for more details on our days in SK:

Language/Daily Five:
Printing: the letter "N" (Start at the blue sky, pull down straight, pick up!  Start back up at the blue sky and slant down right, then push up straight from the green grass to the blue sky.) and "n" (Start at the red fence, pull down straight to the green grass, push back up, curve into a rainbow under the red fence, pull down to the green grass.)
Daily Five: We incorporated a new sign in system to hand off greater responsibility to our independent learners, keeping track of which of the five break-out stations they've tackled this round, and which are left to conquer!  We added "what" to our word wall words, and are sending home a fresh decodable ("black and white") book to add to your SKer's black book box.  SKer's are proud to work in star words to all kinds of original writing, and love being detectives for them in books (try reading a favorite story at home, and ask your SKer to go on a star word hunt!)
Journals: We enjoyed books about MLK Jr, a great man who dreamed of peace, fairness and love for everyone to share.  We felt inspired to write about our own dreams for SK!  Be sure to ask your SKer what his or her dream is to make our room a better place for friends to work and play together.

Math:
Counting on - Our SK friends practiced coutning (by ones, fives and tens) from all different numbers.  It's trickier than it sounds!  We are really working to be sure that all friends have the hang of counting the end of one set of numbers before moving to the next (i.e. "27, 28, 29....30, 31) and that each SKer feels confident through the tricky teens, and while counting by fives and tens, especially when they're not starting from 1.
Addition symbol - Our friends continued their work with the addition symbol, writing number stories while listening to winter word problem, and creating their own "joining together/putting together/adding up" stories to convey with an equation!

Social Studies:
MLK Jr - Terrific kids literature and even a social experiment helped us to kick off a thoughtful exploration of courage, fairness and peaceful problem solving in our classroom.

Reminders:
Snow Pants/Boots - Please don't forget to talk with your SKer about your snow pants/boots plan (i.e. do they come home each night, weekends only, or not at all?)  It'll help us keep everyone's things where they belong!
Ice Skating- Our new date is Thursday January 17th (E Day) - see you at the rink bright and early!
Box Tops - We have our very own Box Tops for Education container outside of our classroom door!  Please encourage your SKer to be a detective for products with Box Tops, and send them along to school for collection.  We appreciate your help in this collaborative SK community project!

Announcements:
Show & Share Night - The big night is January 31st, and more information is headed home with your SKer in his or her Friday Folder.  Don't forget to send back the (enclosed) form with your dinner order if you're choosing to dine here at school!

Welcome, 2013!

We've had a jam-packed first two days of 2013 here in SK P217!  What fun it's been to welcome Mrs. Linzmeier back to our classroom family, and to show her all that we've been doing at school.

Language Arts

Printing - the letter "R" (Start at the blue sky, pull down straight, pick up!  Back to the blue sky, curve right, pinch in at the red fence, slant right down to the green grass.)

Daily 5
- Review: We returned to school and reviewed what it looks like to do Word Work, Work on Writing, Read to Self, Read to Someone and Listen to Reading.
- Book Shop: We loved to clean out our book boxes and "shop" for fresh material on Friday - it's always a great time to choose our own books that are a "just right" fit!
- Decodables: We also added another black and white decodable book to our book box (and are sending home some we've retired, ready to be added to your black book boxes at home!)
- Coming up: we'll be playing games to practice our ip/it/ig and am/at/ap word families while adding a fresh crop (like op/ot/ox) that will be popping up in our decodable books along the way!  We'll continue to add star Word Wall words to our mini offices, and use them well in our reading and writing.

Math

- Addition symbol: While we've talked about adding (joining groups together) many times in SK, playing games and noticing patterns, we worked hard this week to write our own number stories that use the addition (and equals) symbol.  We illustrated our stories too!
- Interrupted counting: We love to count in SK, and starting from all different numbers was a fun challenge!  We practiced counting up from 7, 11, 23, even 50!  We counted by ones, and also fives and tens.  Give it a try with your SKer this weekend!

Social Studies

- MLK Jr Day: We are looking forward to learning more about kindness, courage, and equality next week in SK.  We will read great books, write our thoughtful ideas, and share our work and play in a way that would make Dr. King proud!

Extra!  Extra!  Special Announcements:

- Dismissal Times: For now, please stick with our usual dismissal time.  We will be sure to let you know if times change in the future.

Home or School?  Please share with your SKer what your family's plan is for their boots and snow pants.  Your SKer needs to know if they must take their boots and snowpants home each night, each weekend, or not at all.  We are happy to send them home, or keep them here!

- Ice Skating: We're looking forward to our first lesson Wednesday 1/9 at 8:30!  ********Please remember that all children should be dropped off at the rink (except for bus/before school friends.)  One teacher will meet you there at 8:15, and the other will be there shortly after with the bus/before school friends.  Thank you to our kind parent volunteers for helping to get us all geared up and ready to hit the ice.  Please remember to have all SK friends bring their hat, mitts, jacket, snow pants, and ice skates!

- Show & Share/Special Helpers: We're thrilled to announce our upcoming round of special helpers and their show & share dates!  We've pasted them into the bottom of this post, and have also sent them home in Friday Folders.  (The night before your SKer's special helper and show & share day, please take a peek inside the show & share bag that will come home with them; help them choose an item, and fill out the little sheet of clues, enclosed in their show & share tote.)  Thank you!

- Superstars: We're thrilled to be celebrating our January Superstars (Summer 1/8, Evan 1/9, Lilly 1/14, and Lewis 1/17).  Please know that we'll always send home your Superstar's poster with a note detailing the way our afternoon will run.  If you receive the supplies and have any additional questions, please feel welcome to get in touch!

- No School: Please remember that school will not be in session on Monday 1/21 or on Monday 1/28 (MLK Jr Day, and Faculty Inservice.)

- Rest Time Notebooks: Please ask your SKer if they need another notebook for their rest time Art Box - many busy friends have run out of space to create!
